Anxiety-Free Children’s Dentistry in Highlands Ranch & Castle Pines
At Colorado Kids Pediatric Dentistry, we know that visiting the dentist can often be very scary and intimidating for young children. Our Castle Pines and Highlands Ranch pediatric dentists are committed to making your child’s dental experience as easy and comfortable as possible. We offer sedation dentistry to help your child relax when he or she is afraid or fidgety, has low pain tolerance, has physical handicaps or exhibits strong gag reflexes.
Sedation can range from the use of nitrous oxide to calm a patient to general anesthetics used to put patients to sleep. Procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation. Before using a sedative or anesthetic, it is important to tell us about any medications or medical treatments your child is receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, we will talk to you about the process of sedation and pre-and post-sedation instructions.
Sedation dentistry is endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA) and is a very effective way to make your child comfortable during their dental visit. We offer sedation dentistry at both our Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines offices, serving Centennial, Littleton, and Parker, CO as well as the surrounding communities.
Types of Sedation
Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps scared or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and oxygen is administered for five to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation.
Anesthesia services in the field of dentistry have been around for a very long time with an excellent record of safety. These services are quickly becoming increasingly important and more readily available. Colorado Kids Pediatric Dentistry has aligned with Care Point Anesthesia, a group of highly trained anesthesiologists that specialize in providing your child with advanced anesthesia services that are the same as those provided at the hospital, all in the comfort of our offices and at a fraction of the cost.
