Helpful Guidelines For Preventing Dental Decay
What is the most common chronic childhood disease? The answer may surprise you: 16 million kids suffer from untreated dental decay per year in the United States. The impact of this very common childhood disease is also felt in the schools, where it is estimated that children miss collectively 51 million school hours. Unfortunately, many of those children who are missing school and suffering from this chronic childhood disease are from low-income families. Because these children are unable to see a dentist they often have twice the amount of dental decay.
What’s Being Done To Prevent This Epidemic?
The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives was created to help spread awareness and teach children the importance of good oral health. Some of the ways you can help to make sure that your child does not suffer from dental decay is by following these simple rules:
- Brush for 2 minutes, 2 times a day
- Visit a dentist
- Floss every day
- Use fluoride
While we can certainly help to prevent dental decay for our patients, the real work to be done is in the habits you set for your child when they are at home. Helping them to remember to brush, floss and use fluoride are simple steps that you can take at home that will have a tremendous impact on their dental health later in life. Additionally, bringing them in to see our pediatric dentists here at our Highlands Ranch and Castle Pines offices regularly will insure that their teeth are in a great condition not only today but for many years to come.
